5 L batch · Target OG 1.100 · FG 1.010 (semi-sweet)
Gravity points needed: (1.100 − 1.000) × 1000 = 100 points
Honey: 100 × 5 / 292.16 = 1.71 kg (3.78 lb)
Water: 5 − (1.71 / 1.42) = 3.80 L
Estimated ABV at FG 1.010: (1.100 − 1.010) × 131.25 = 11.8%
Common mistakes.
- Adding honey to a full batch volume of water. The honey adds its own volume, so you'll end up over your target batch size. Top up to volume after dissolving the honey.
- Not measuring after dissolving. Honey varies. Always take a hydrometer reading after the honey is fully mixed, before pitching yeast. If you're off by more than 0.005, adjust before fermentation starts.
- Skipping staggered nutrient additions on a strong mead. Above OG 1.110, yeasts struggle without help. Use TOSNA or a similar staggered schedule. Stress produces H2S and fusel alcohols.
- Underestimating ABV potential. Many yeast strains tolerate 14–18% ABV in mead. A great mead at OG 1.150 fermented dry can reach 19%. Pick a yeast rated for the target.

How accurate is the 35-ppppg honey constant?
Honey varies 33–37 gravity points per pound per gallon depending on water content. The calculator uses 35 ppppg (292 points per kg/L of must) as a typical figure. Always confirm with a hydrometer reading after dissolving the honey.
What about staggered nutrient additions?
Above OG 1.110, single-dose nutrient additions can stress the yeast. A staggered schedule (TOSNA or similar) splits the nutrients across the first half of fermentation. The calculator displays a nudge above this threshold.
Why do I need less water than batch volume?
Honey occupies volume. A kilogram of honey is roughly 0.70 litres. If your target batch is 5 L and you need 1.5 kg of honey, the water you add is 5 L − (1.5 / 1.42) ≈ 3.94 L.
Can I substitute another sugar?
You can blend honey with table sugar in a bochet-style or to boost gravity inexpensively, but the result is no longer a pure traditional mead. The calculator only models honey contribution.
